The Society of Killustrators

Founded by a band of illustrators, this loose group was built to hone a craft, further a trade, and stay in contact. Until now this sect of close friends has functioned on an invite-only basis. It's a creative game with no winner, and a chance to see how people in our field answer the same riddles laid before them.

Should you choose to participate, just take up a post, illustrate, meet the deadline and submit accordingly.

‘Dumb And Dumber 2’ confirmed

Category: VHS Cover for 1, or 2.

Deadline: May 11th, 2012 (12 Noon, EST) - UPDATED.

Specs: 5 X 8 inches (submission = JPG / 438 X 700 @ 72dpi / RGB)

Co-director Peter Farrelly has revealed plans for a follow-up to the hit 1994 comedy about the cross-country adventures of two intellectually-challenged friends. But he insisted that the new film will be the first true sequel.

He told ComingSoon.net: “We’re getting set to shoot Dumb And Dumber 2 in September. It’s the first sequel we’ve ever done and we’ve got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back.”

2003 saw the release of prequel Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, but it did not feature the original stars. Farrelly emphasised: “We did not do Dumb And Dumberer. That was a studio thing.

“So we’ve always wanted to do a sequel and Jim called up. Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, ‘We’ve got to do this thing again’. He had just watched Dumb And Dumber and he said, ‘This is the perfect sequel. Let’s do it.”

Farrelly will once again direct with his brother Bob, and Sean Anders and John Morris will write the screenplay.

The Salmon of Wisdom

Category: Children’s Book Cover (Paperback)

Deadline: Mar. 23, 2012

Specs: Open - Keep in mind, this is a book.

Submission: Max width @ 700px (@ 72dpi)

—————————————

In Irish legend salmon are imbued with great age and are associated with the land of Ireland. One of the four oldest creatures of Irish lore is the Salmon of Assroe. In the stories of Finn McCool there is a particular tale that occurs at the source of the Boyne River. It says that the source of the Boyne is a peaceful pool surounded by Hazel trees. An ancient salmon lived there, and fed on hazel nuts as they fell into the pool. Nearby lived an old poet, who desired greatly to catch that salmon and have a fine feast of him, because a prophecy told that whosoever ate that ancient, wise salmon would gain all knowledge.

Finn, as a youth, came to apprentice with the poet. When the poet finally caught the salmon, he instructed Finn to cook it for him. But when he was cooking the salmon, he burned his thumb on the fish’s flank. He sucked on his thumb to ease the pain, and thus tasted of the fish before his master did. Ever after, whenever Finn needed special knowledge, he would suck on his thumb, and whatever knowledge was needed in the current situation would come to him.

Like many of the magical beasts of Irish lore, the fish was renewed to be eaten again and again. This metaphor for the gathering of wisdom speaks of going to the quiet places within ourselves (the quiet pool), patiently eating the tidbits of knowledge (the hazel nuts), patiently seeking understanding (the salmon), and distilling it to the wisdom we need and the inspiration to create (poetry).

‘Star Wars’ Themed Burger

Category: Concept Illustration

Deadline: FEB 10, 2012 (12 NOON Sharp, EST)

Specs: submission = JPG / 800 X 800 @ 72dpi - RGB

Instructions: Create your own ‘Star Wars’ themed burger illustration. Mayo the force be with you!

Restrictions: Be creative / Include your title in the illustration

—————————————

Star Wars fans rejoice. You will now be able to enjoy your favorite side of the force in a whole knew way, by eating it in burger form.

There’s only one problem, you’ll have to fly to France to do it.

French fast food chain Quick recently announced the introduction of two new burgers, the Jedi Burger and the Dark Vador Burger – the latter being named for the Sith lord Darth Vader, who is known as Dark Vador in France. The burger launch is timed to coincide with the re-release of “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” in 3D.

The Jedi burger looks very much the same as a regular burger.

However, the odd-looking Vador burger is turning a few heads.  The buns of the burger are dark black, giving it a burnt, somewhat sinister appearance, much like Vader himself. But don’t worry. Potential buyers should have no fear because, the Daily Mail is reporting, the buns are merely dyed, not burnt.

The burgers are on sale for a limited time only. Quick plans to stop selling them on March 1.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!

Kids set off Christmas high jinks

The fate of Christmas lies in the hands of a group of children who are definitely on the naughty list - at least onstage.

In the Long Beach Playhouse production “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” previewing tonight and opening Saturday, a couple is forced to cast the troublemaking Herdman family in their Christmas pageant.

“The play is about these terrible, terrible children who smoke cigars and beat people up,” said Nicole Dominguez, director of the Mainstage show running through Dec. 24. “And basically it’s about what happens when they learn what Christmas means to each of them individually. So they start as these terrible kids and then they kind of make a transformation. It’s really a funny, funny show.”

While Christmas may be saved onstage, Dominguez says the company is planning on making it the best holiday experience offstage as well.

There will be a singer in the lobby for a preshow performance and after the show the audience will be led in a Christmas carol sing-along. Santa Claus will make an appearance on some nights.

The show, based on the children’s book by Barbara Robinson, stars Jennifer Moraca as Grace Bradley, along with about 14 children ranging in age from 7 to 11.

One of the young cast is 10-year-old Julia Golison, who plays Gladys Herdman, one of the more rambunctious characters, says Dominguez.

“They describe her as mean, sassy and she bites,” said Golison, whose sister Beth is also in the play. “She’s just really crazy.”

This is the first professional play the Long Beach resident has been in outside of a school setting, but she says she has enjoyed the process and looks forward to the actual performances.

Golison says she loves everything about acting, but her favorite part about being in this particular show is how crazy her character acts.

Working with so many children can get a little crazy too, though Dominguez says she has found a way to handle it all.

“If you treat kids like they’re adults - not that they’re adults, but that they know what they’re doing - and you have confidence in them, it’s actually a lot easier than I thought,” she said.

“I mean, there are stressing times getting kids to calm down, but for some reason these kids, they listen to me. Maybe it’s because I’m so tall. But they are well-behaved kids. And they get it. The first day, I said, `It’s a privilege to be at the theater, it’s a privilege to do theater.’ And I think they really took that to heart.”

This is the first play Dominguez has directed for the Long Beach Playhouse, though she has directed six shows elsewhere this year. And out of all of them, she says, this is her favorite.

While it’s kid friendly, she says adults will like it too because it’s a fun, positive play that will put audiences in the holiday spirit.

“It’s not a very long show, but it is a full night of theater, and when I watch it or while I’m directing it, it makes me grin,” Dominguez said. “It’s so much fun to watch these kids put on this terrible Christmas pageant that ends up being really wonderful.”

SPECIAL RULES:

1 - MUST USE TEMPLATE PROVIDED BELOW

2 - Must have STANLEY IN FINAL SUBMISSIONS

Specs:  JPG / 363 X 500 pixels @ 72dpi - RGB - or larger depending on costume.

Submissions are not limited to 1. Feel free to do as many as you like. Flat Stanley likes candy, so dress him up accordingly. Final submissions must contain original sketch (above).

A: It’s really up to you, the final can be anything you’d like as long as it relates to the shape of his body and his face remains the same look (you can add color, etc if you’d like), you can also make a paper doll cut-out sheet, with a set of clothes and accessories, you can put him in a scene or draw a costume on top of him—as long as he is somewhere in the mix. He just needs to be ready to get his candy!

Domino’s Pizza in Japan hatches half-baked plan to build store on moon

Category: Editorial Illustration

Deadline: September 30, 2011 (High Noon, EST)

Specs: 6 X 6 inches (submission = JPG / 800 X 800 pixels @ 72dpi - RGB)

—————————————

If the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, it could be because Domino’s Pizza in Japan has drafted a plan to open the first galactic pizzeria on the moon.

In what can only be described as a marketing scheme that’s out of this world, the pizza chain said they’re planning to take a “giant leap for all mankind” and build the first fast food joint on the moon.

Their website “Moon Branch Project” was launched last week.

Though a joke to put the spotlight on their 25th anniversary in Japan this year, the company went so far as to hire construction and engineering firm Maeda Corp. to come up with official-looking reports and figures and number-crunch the estimated cost. The final tally? An astronomical price tag of $21.7 billion.

An artist’s rendering shows a multi-level, dome-shaped restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows for diners - for the view, of course - a greenhouse, gym, play room, private pods and astronaut pizza delivery men.

Embedded along the way is a feel-good - albeit somewhat lost and misplaced - message delivered by Domino’s Pizza Japan CEO Scott Oelkers for people to follow their dreams.

Meanwhile, though most consumers and readers understood the pitch as a publicity stunt, the story also generated confusion among readers of  the Daily Telegraph in the UK, and the LA Times where some commentators took the joke seriously.

“I have never heard of such a ridiculous idea in my life,” wrote one disgusted reader. “Please feed the hungry here - the children who go to bed hungry every night and don’t know where their next meal will come from. They will definitely not be able to afford the trip to the moon. I will never eat a Domino’s pizza again.”

In 2001, Pizza Hut became the first to deliver its pizza to astronauts in space.

Britain’s Rarest Spider Released Back Into Wild

Category: Editorial Illustration

Deadline: September 02, 2011 (High Noon, Sharp, EST)

Specs: 6 X 6 inches (submission = JPG / 800 X 800 @ 72dpi)

—————————————

By Mark Brown, Wired UK

Britain’s rarest spider is to set for a dramatic comeback, as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RPSB) has released the aranchid into one of the country’s hottest bug habitats.

The arachnid in question is the ladybird spider — named for the bright red bodies, covered in black spots, of the mature males. They’re known for building silk-lined tubes and silk canopies, which they decorate with the prized remains of eaten beetles and ants, a bit like mounting a stag’s head on your wall.

The striking bug was on the brink of extinction in the mid 90s when a single colony of just 56 spiders was left in the UK. Since then, conservationists have striven to spread the critter further afield, and on Aug. 11 they introduced it to the RSPB’s Arne reserve in Dorset.

This bug hub is one of the most diverse insect habitats in the country, housing 240 species of spider and hundreds of insect species. It’s home to the threatened silver studded blue butterfly, the Purbeck mason wasp (which is only found in Dorset) and the Roesel’s bush cricket (which was discovered on the site last year).

Conservationists came up with a rather low-tech method of transferring the spiders. They plopped the ladybird arachnids into empty plastic water bottles, filled with heather and moss. Turns out, the bottle is the perfect shape and size for spider nests, and can be buried in holes in the ground so the spiders can colonize the nearby area.

Toby Branston, RSPB Arne warden, said, “Arne is an amazing place for bugs and this is the best time of year to see and hear them. To be introducing such a rare new species here is very exciting, and I hope we can help it to spread further.”
